How to make the Hipster nano PDA

October 17th, 2006

Hello, Wikipedia readers!

We all know and love the Hipster PDA for taking notes and ideas on the fly, but sometimes you want something a little smaller and more discreet for note-taking. Enter the Hipster nano!

If you’ve been to a trade show, you know you walk out with dozens, if not hundreds of business cards. Scan them in using your business card scanner. Now you have a pile of cards, right?

Find the ones with blank backs. As a bonus, if you can, find one that has a calendar on the back. Typically, bankers and real estate folks are most likely to have a calendar on their card.

Using a heavy stapler, bind them all together. Make sure the one with the calendar is on the bottom, calendar side out.

Now you have a nice, nano-sized Hipster. Tear off each card after you’ve used it and scan it back into your computer using your business card scanner.

Bonus - flip it over, and there’s your calendar.

It’s the ultimate Hipster nano PDA on the cheap!

Why not buy a 99 cent tiny notebook and then you wouldn’t have heavy card stock and staples in your back pocket?

Mainly because you’re also recycling old business cards, too.

I’m guessing this would be small enough to fit into a credit card slot in a wallet? Sounds pretty damn useful to me!

How come you have Chris Brogan’s card on the top of the pile instead of Jon Rudy’s? Also, how much did that salt company pay you for product placement…

As an avid business card collector, “defacing” and “destroying” business cards in this manner is sacrilege ;) I love the innovative idea of recycling & re-using items, but I’m sad for the poor defenseless business cards. Just thought I’d throw in the opinion of someone who actually keeps the cards in their pristine condition.

Excellent. I have several boxes of obsolete business cards I pack-ratted away. They laughed at me, but I am vindicated at last! Mwah-hah-hah-hah.

I just found out about The Hipster via a friend, who cranked out 43 reasons why it is LAME! I have laughed more since beginning the research for my own blog post, then I have laughed in YEAPS! I would like to reproduce some of these fine comments on my blog, is this possible, how to I give citation? I am almost blind, and the computer has made my life so much easier, then the (for me) bad old days of paper, manual typewriters and index cards. But for those of you with normal vision, I bet the rediscovery of a low-tech solution for data capture is refreshing. Far better then recordig one’s research notes on cocktail napkins! God, I love it!
