Bum Rush the Charts statistics update - 9 AM ET

March 23rd, 2007

Here are the final statistics, web-based, from yesterday. From Feedburner’s metrics of the Bum Rush web site:

Here are the final Urchin-based statistics of the Buy Now page:

That number up top is 13,877.

Overall, not bad. As mentioned earlier, we should have some initial numbers from IODA soon; final purchase data (including people who bought directly from iTunes without using the affiliate link) could take some time.

Also, if you’re a researcher interested in crunching the data yourself, here’s a ZIP file of the clickthrough tracker statistics. It’s 817 KB, so make sure that you have some time to spare. The columns in it are IP address, referring URL, and timestamp. From this, you are more than welcome to do your own data analysis. Unlike the Urchin stats above, this data file is raw, raw data - including duplicates, spiders, etc. Also, there’s a slight data skew in that the timestamps are Eastern Time, which means that any purchases after midnight ET (9 PM PT) won’t be in there, but it’s a good first start for data analysis.

I was unaware of an affiliate link, so I purchased directly through iTunes - lets hope I was joined by a lot of other people!

Pretty impressive numbers. I noticed that even though Black Lab didn’t break the Top 100, the track Mine Again moved up about 5 spots to the number one track on their Artist page. I bought mine! Here’s my blog post that promoted Bum Rush the Charts. http://blog.jamesrbritton.com/2007/02/07/boycott-bottled-water/

I purchased directly also. I could not get the buy links to work yesterday after three successive tries.

Loves the activism, loved bum rushing the charts.

I even broke a Lenten promise of not buying music to help this cause.

    Power to the People,
    Ed

Also, bear in mind that the affiliate link only worked for people with accounts in the US iTunes Music Store - those of us outside of the US (or without a US credit card) had to buy directly from our national store.

    Cheers,

    Jack.

While overall it was an interesting experiment (and not quite a failure) I feel it was a big disappointment. I expected at least 100 or so from my show alone. My guess is it was more like the 15-30

I featured BumRush on my show for about 3 weeks (3 Shows). During that time, I’ve had about 15,000 hits and several hundred downloads. I received some feedback from listeners. Most (it seems) just don’t care enough to go through any sort of motion that would require much more than a few mouse clicks and get it for free. Since the majority of my subscribers come from http://www.pageflakes.com (no itunes required), it shouldn’t surprise me that apathy won the day.

Will I participate next round? HELL YES! I love bangin’ my head against the wall… Fuck the RIAA and a music industry that would pay radio stations to play certain music but want to turn around and sue me for playing works they control on my PodCast!

    Peace and Bananas,

We don’t know if it made the top 100 yet. The actual iTunes charts in the larger markets have not been updated in about 36 hours. In some smaller markets, they have. We know ‘Mine Again’ was at number 5 on the top 100 in The Netherlands and number 9 in Sweden. That’s about all so far.

I am a US iTunes customer with a US credit card. I tried the affiliate link in the afternoon between 3-6 pmEST. Each time it never completed. I watched on my task bar the link light display go unlit. I tried the affiliate link with iTunes resident(in other words open) and I tried it with iTunes unlaunched. I waited 10 minutes once and the link purely died. I know it wasn’t my firewall setting as I could buy directly from iTunes. I’m just sorry I couldn’t be a part of the statistical analysis result.

I also found some difficulty with using digg option and found that difficult to use. I have a music blog on wordpress but couldn’t get it to digg my blog. I also found that I had difficulty being listed as a blog lonk on the digg site.

Maybe it was one of those days I just wasn’t understanding my computer. My suggestion is that the instructions for what we were supposed to accomplish with digg and Stumble Upon could have been more clear, steps and results wise. Just feedback for the next bums rush the charts.

I found this an interesting experiment in community activism.

I noticed Black Lab Mine Again did not crack the Top 100 downloads on 3/22/07. My guess is that Apple iTunes downloads a million plus songs a day. What was the range of download sales for the Top 100. I am guessing that grouping is moving 50-100,000 downloads daily.

Also was there any political backlash with Apple on this event as it was not really conducted with their main business partners in mind. In other words did Apple look the other way and ignore what was happening with bum rush the charts or was their support inside Apple for this level of internet activism?

    Peace,
    Ed Jennings

This shows the world that when podcasters and listeners work togather we can make history.
Black Lab is a great band and deserves every download they get. Thanks to all the artists and bands out there that are putting out the great tunes on the PMN and other great sights.

According to the charts on the Canadian iTunes Store, Mine Again reached 96 on the overall top songs, and 22 on the Rock Chart. Not bad, I was expecting it to be much higher, even though I just found out about it on the day we were to buy (I bought, and posted it on Music Emissions)

  12. Jackson says

If 10,000 or more people bought the song in the U.S., either through the affiliate or directly, it is likely that the song was the most downloaded song of the day. Most songs in the top 10 don’t sell 10,000 downloads in an entire week.

So the real question is, why didn’t the song chart higher? Is the chart a weekly average? Studying this question has raised another question — why has the U.S. iTunes chart been locked for the last 24 hours? It is supposed to refresh every hour, yet none of the chart placements have changed in over 24 hours (and I’ve been watching). In fact, even now, on Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific Time, “Mine Again” is STILL #67.

    What is going on here?
