An Open Letter to Apple: Podcasts in the iTunes Wi-Fi Store, Please!

November 2nd, 2007

This story now available on Digg. Please Digg after signing! Thanks!

Dear Apple, Inc.:

Slackershot: No podcasts in the iTunes Wi-Fi StoreI love my new iPod Touch. I love that it has Wi-Fi and can do all sorts of neat things, and I even appreciate the ability to impulse buy music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Store. I have one request: please add podcasting support to the iTunes Wi-Fi Store, as you’ve done in the main iTunes Store. As you know, podcasts are a great way to extend the power and usefulness of an iPod, and a great way to upsell buyers to larger hard drives, particularly video podcasts.

I’d love to go into the iTunes Wi-Fi Store, use the same natural interface to search for podcasts on the topics I like, play them wirelessly right then and there like a radio, and subscribe to them with one touch, then sync back to my iTunes on my MacBook Pro when I get home.

Below you’ll find fellow podcasters and listeners in support of this petition. Please add robust podcast support to the iTunes Wi-Fi Store!

Best regards,

Christopher Penn
Producer, the Financial Aid Podcast
Co-Founder, PodCamp

To sign this petition, just leave a comment, ideally with either the podcast you produce or the podcasts you listen to! At the end of this I’ll be printing out the comments and Fedexing them to Cupertino.

this is the very first thing that i looked for when i updated my i phone to rev. 1.1.1. Sadly, I did not find podcast support. There IS a revenue model for apple as more and more movie companies are podcasting production updates as a movie is prepared for release. Easily those companies would pay for the exposure that apple could provide them to call attention to these new releases, while also creating a line of communication between the production studios (content providers) and apple.

I think it’s a great idea - in fact it’s all that’s holding me back from purchasing an itouch to add to my many ipods and iphone - G5, G4 and MacBook. Here’s what’s weird - after changing from Mac to Windows and back to Mac - I threw in an amazing Dell M1710. But why did I do this? Obviously something is missing or was. I don’t know how easy you’ve made it in Leopard to add Windows to the MacBook, but before it was NOT a simple thing to do. Even after downloading Bootcamp and buying a copy of Vista - it all just sits on the shelf. I’ve since added Leopard to all of the Mac’s but haven’t looked into the change since I bought the Dell. Maybe I should look into it and then sell the Dell. Does anyone have any comments except the ones that call me stupid? Thanks.

PLEASE add podcasting support. I love my ipod touch and really wish it had this extra feature. I listen to BBC and other news podcasts.

Please add the podcast support. I listen to all of the twit.tv network. dl.tv and cranky geeks and many revision 3 productions. It would be great to not always have to be connected to the computer to get my favorite content. This would be really great for vacation time when I dont want to take my computer.

Love the touch. Love that apple was first/best in market for this kind star-trek-came-early device. Still, podcast on the wifi store makes perfect sense. Robust radio/podcast support online would give those Serius and XM people a reason to use only an iPod touch. Seriously, this thing is the coolest device I ever used. Podcast/radio would make it cooler and it’s all a software fix.

I feel like I’m driving a ferarri with only 2 gears and the handbrake welded on - its still way better than anything else on the road, but it could be SOOO much better by simply taking the chains off :-)
it’s running osx, it’s got full connectivity, let the leopard loose!

This is the ONE feature I’m waiting for before I buy the Ipod Touch. Apple just released the 32GB Touch (16GB wasn’t enough) it would be nice if they soon announce podcast support for the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. Otherwise I’ll just get the Ipod classic 160GB for ~1/7 of the price per GB. My current Ipod is showing its age and its 60GBs is limiting. I would like to use the 60GB for music and the Touch 32GB for everything else.
